Furrinalia

The Furrinalia was a festival held on 25th July in honor of the goddess Furrina. Despite being a public holiday, the Furrinalia had become obscure by the time of the Late Republic. Even Varro, a Roman scholar from the 1st c. BC, noted that few people knew the name of the goddess.

Date: 25th July
Deity: Furrina

Furrina was associated with water, and the Furrinalia followed the Lucaria, a festival related to forests and groves, and the Neptunalia, a festival honoring Neptune, the god of the sea. This grouping of festivals suggests a concern for water and its importance during the summer months.

The Furrinalia was one of the fifteen festivals assigned to the flamines, high priests of official cults. Furrina had a sacred grove on the Janiculum, which may have been the location of the festival.
