Date: 17th August
Deity: Portunus
Observances: Throwing keys into a fire

One of the rituals associated with the Portunalia was the throwing of keys into a fire. This act was believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.

The main temple dedicated to Portunus was located in the Forum Boarium, near the Portus Tiberinus, the city’s oldest riverine port, and the Pons Aemilius, the oldest stone bridge over the Tiber River. This location reflects Portunus’ connection to water and trade.
