Legio XV Primigenia
Legio XV Primigenia, also known as the Fifteenth Firstborn Legion, was formed in 39 AD by Caligula in preparation for his aborted invasion of Britannia. Its emblem was the goddess Fortuna and its cognomen was an epithet of the same goddess.

Cognomen: Primigenia
Emblem: Fortuna
Major Campaigns: Batavian Revolt (69-70 AD)
Main HQ: Vetera I (Xanten, Germany)
Unfortunately, there is very little evidence for Legio XV Primigenia‘s activities during its existence.
Inscriptions initially place the legion at Moguntiacum (Mainz), while there is also evidence that in then moved to Bonna (Bonn) before finally setting at Vetera (Xanten).

During the Batavian Revolt, Legio XV Primigenia and Legio V Alaudae were prevented from engaging the enemy by the defection of their German auxiliaries and so retreated to the fortress of Vetera (Xanten). Both legions were besieged by the Batavi there. Ultimately, Roman forces were unable to reached their beleaguered comrades and so Legio XV Primigenia and Legio V Alaudae surrendered to the rebels. However, as the legions left the safety of the fortress, they were massacred by the Batavi and never re-formed.
