Viridius
Viridius, a Celtic god known only from a handful of inscriptions and a possible statue fragment, was worshipped in Roman Britain.
Our only evidence for Viridius, a Celtic god, comes from two inscriptions found in Ancaster, Lincolnshire.
While our only concrete evidence for Viridius comes from inscriptions found in Ancaster, an intriguing possibility exists. A nearby limestone carving, likely an altarpiece from the late Iron Age, depicts a naked man wielding an axe beneath an archway. Though lacking inscriptions, the location and the figure’s characteristics (potentially symbolizing strength, masculinity, or connection to nature through interpretations of the name Viridius) have led some to speculate it represents the god himself.
