Larunda

Larunda was a Naiad nymph and mother to the Lares.

Consort: Mercury
Children: The Lares

Hylas and the Nymphs, painting by Henrietta Rae.

She was the daughter of the river Almo and was incapable of keeping secrets, and so revealed Jupiter’s affair with Juturna to Juno. For betraying his trust, Jupiter cut out Larunda’s tongue and ordered Mercury to conduct her to Avernus, the gateway to the Underworld and realm of Pluto. Mercury, however, fell in love with Larunda and they had two children, the Lares. However, she had to stay in a hidden cottage in the woods so that Jupiter would not find her.
