Doris

Doris bridged the divide between the land and the sea. This Oceanid nymph, daughter of the primal forces Oceanus and Tethys, became the wife of Nereus, the wise old god of the sea. She personified the fertile meeting point where freshwater streams mingled with the ocean’s salty embrace. Her domain, these rich estuaries, teemed with life, a reminder of the interconnectedness of all things.

As an Oceanid, Doris was a daughter of the primordial titans Oceanus and Tethys, making her sister to all the river gods who snaked their way across the land. Married to Nereus, the wise old man of the sea, she became the mother of a vast and vibrant family. Her children included not only the sea nymph Nerites, but also the fifty Nereids – beautiful maidens of the waves like Thetis (mother of Achilles), Amphitrite (wife of Poseidon), and Galatea (immortal object of love triangles).
